Ergonomics 101: Building a Healthy, Comfortable Workspace
You can have the most beautiful desk in the world, but if it wrecks your back by 3 p.m., it's the wrong setup. Good ergonomics isn't about expensive gear — it's about getting a handful of heights and angles right.
Here are the rules that matter most.
The 90-90-90 rule
The foundation of a healthy seated posture is three right angles:
- Elbows at ~90° when your hands rest on the keyboard
- Hips at ~90° with your thighs roughly parallel to the floor
- Knees at ~90° with feet flat on the floor (or a footrest)
If you can't hit all three, adjust your chair height first, then your desk.
Monitor height: top of the screen at eye level
Your eyes should land on the top third of the screen when looking straight ahead. Too low and you crane your neck down all day; too high and you strain upward. A monitor arm or a simple stand fixes most setups.
Sit an arm's length away — about 50–70 cm. If you squint, increase the font size rather than leaning in.
Chair: support the lower back
A good chair preserves the natural inward curve of your lower spine. Look for adjustable lumbar support, or add a small cushion. Armrests should let your shoulders relax — not shrug up, not dangle down.
Desk height and wrists
Your wrists should stay straight and neutral while typing, not bent up or down. If your desk is fixed and slightly too high, raise your chair and add a footrest. Keep the mouse close so you're not reaching.
Movement beats perfection
Even a perfect setup isn't meant to be held still for eight hours. Stand, stretch, and shift position every 30–60 minutes. A sit-stand routine — even an informal one — keeps your body happier than any single posture.
Test it before you buy
The easiest way to get these heights right is to plan the relationship between desk, chair, and monitor before you commit. Setupin's 3D builder lets you visualize how the pieces fit together so your final setup supports good posture from day one.
